Bone Crushing Repentance

Bone Crushing Repentance

Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight. Psalm 51:4

True repentance only happens when we go mono y mono with God.

It is all too easy when we get caught with our hand in a cookie jar to succumb to the fear of man and respond with a desire to fix it. While sin often has consequences socially that need to be addressed sooner or later, if you start the process of repentance on the horizontal level, it is unlikely that you will ever truly repent.

Sin is identified not primarily because it offends people, but because it offends God. King David recognized with laser sharp focus his own responsibility before God—“against You, You only, have I sinned.” As much as David was aware of how evil his sin was in the sight of his nation, he was more concerned with how evil his sin was in the sight of his God.

Your cookie jar may be a secret pornography habit, an alcohol addiction, a lying spirit, bitterness, resentment, envy, jealousy, gossip, or a host of other socially offensive issues. But until you recognize your sin against God, you will never truly repent.

Father God, as a child of the light, I desire to walk in the Light. I give You permission to shine Your flashlight into the dark basement of my soul. Open any closet and sift through the rubble of my inner life. Confront me with anything that offends You and lead me in Your truth. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
