What Gets You Excited?
What Gets You Excited?
“Do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” Luke 10:20
As people who enjoy serving Christ, it is always beneficial to make sure what juices us the most is not what we do for God, but what He does through us.
When the 72 disciples returned from their short term mission trip (see Luke 10:1-20), they returned with exuberant joy, because for the first time in their lives, they were able to take authority over evil spirits. As they were giving high fives to each other, Jesus gently rebuked them, “Do not rejoice…that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” They were rejoicing in what they did for God; Jesus challenged them to rejoice instead in what God alone had done for them. The big deal that happens today in your life and ministry is not what you do for God, but what God does in you and through you for the honor and glory of Jesus Christ.
Father, thank You for this rebuke. Purify my praise. As satisfying it is to know that You are working through me, my ultimate joy comes not in what I do for You, but what You do for me. Praise the Lord!
