Don’t Play with Fire

Don’t Play with Fire

Take care not to go up on the mountain. Exodus 19:12

The fire of God’s manifest presence is not the latest fad or some toy with which to play. God does not strut His miracles in front of the church like a three ring circus. On the contrary, God always prepares us in advance so that we appropriately humble ourselves under the weight of His glory.

When God was about to descend on Mount Sinai and meet with Moses face to face, covering the mountain with the manifestation of a raging fire, He instructed His servant Moses to descend the mountain, consecrate the people, and warn them not to be casual with His presence. “Take care not to go up into the mountain or touch the edge of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death” (Exodus 19:12).

There is nothing more precious, more valuable than the manifest presence of Christ. We must not treat it casually or flippantly.

There is a lesson here for all of us—don’t play with fire.

Oh Lord God Almighty, you are a consuming fire. I clothe myself with humility and the fear of the Lord. I tremble in Your presence. Remove from my heart any ounce of pride, contempt, and irreverence. Prepare me to encounter Your greater glory.
