Devoted to Prayer

Devoted to Prayer

"Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful."  Colossians 4:2 NIV

Everyone prays, but not everyone is devoted to prayer. A person who dabbles in prayer dabbles in the manifest presence of Christ. Anyone who dabbles in God’s presence has obviously missed the point. Those who are devoted to prayer are normally those who are devoted to God’s presence.

The word “devoted” is the Greek word, proskartero, which is the strongest word in the Greek language for commitment. It means to “adhere to, to lock onto, to remain steadfastly attentive, to be courageously devoted.” Of the ten times this word is used in the New Testament, six times it is used in reference to prayer. It is a picture of pit bull who sinks its teeth into a hunk of raw beef and refuses to let go. It is like a heat seeking missile that locks on the heat source and refuses to let go until it hits the target.

The manifest presence of Christ is the ultimate heat source. When we lock onto His presence, we become devoted to prayer. Refuse to settle for life without the presence.

Father God, I repent of being a dabbler. Give me a heart that is courageously devoted to prayer. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
