Holy Resolutions

Holy Resolutions

"We make it our aim to please Him."  2 Corinthians 5:9

Don’t be afraid of making promises to God. Is it possible that we have become so addicted to failure that we are afraid to even establish godly goals and resolutions?  It may be time to take a lesson from Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758).

As a teenager he had written 38 resolutions that would guide his life. By the age of 20, he had added more, bringing the total to 70. These guiding statements contain words of godly resolve:
“Being sensible that I am unable to do anything without God’s help, I do humbly entreat Him, by His grace, to keep these resolutions as far as they are agreeable to His will, for Christ’s sake.”
“Resolved, to never lose one moment of time, but to improve it in the most profitable way I possibly can.”
“Resolved, to live with all my might while I do live.”
“Resolved, never to do anything which I would be afraid to do if it were the last hour of my life.”
“Resolved, to read over these resolutions once a week.”

What is Christ calling you to today? Don’t allow past failures to hinder you from making future commitments. Resolutions are godly statements to which the righteous aspire. Any commitment Christ is calling you to make to Him, He will empower you to fulfill. Trust Him.

Father God, I repent of my fear of commitments. I receive Your forgiveness for past failures. Empower me now to make godly resolutions that will honor You.
