Baptized With The Holy Spirit

Baptized With The Holy Spirit

You will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. Acts 1:5

Nearly every protestant denomination grew out of a rock solid belief in the promise of the baptism with the Holy Spirit.

The Methodists started with a solid conviction of the infilling of the Holy Spirit. John Wesley would not ordain anyone into ministry who could not give clear testimony of being filled with the Holy Spirit.

The Presbyterians and those in the Reformed tradition believed in the filling of the Holy Spirit. John Calvin himself referred to the church as “the fellowship of the flaming heart,” and he adopted the flaming heart as the symbol of his movement.

The Lutherans believed in the infilling of the Holy Spirit. Martin Luther, father of the Lutheran church, wrote in his majestic hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” “the Spirit and the gifts are ours.”

The Baptists look to Charles Finney, who frequently talked about “my baptism in the Holy Ghost.” He reported, “It seemed to come in waves and waves of liquid love; for I could not express it in any other way. It seemed like the very breath of God.” Multiple signs and wonders accompanied his ministry.

Even Fundamentalists and Bible churches look to R.A Torrey and D.L. Moody as role models, and these two men experienced the fullness and “baptism of the Holy Ghost.” In fact, Moody’s close friend, Torrey, gave an extended account of Moody’s encounter with the baptism of the Holy Spirit in his significant book, Why God Used D.L. Moody. In it he talked about the weekend when Moody asked him to preach on, “The Baptism With the Holy Spirit, What It Is, What It does, The Need of It, and The Possibility of It.” The next day he spoke on, “The Baptism of the Holy Spirit—How to Get It.”

No matter what your tradition, the baptism or infilling with the Holy Spirit needs to be more than a sentence in your doctrinal statement. It needs to be your experience, today.

Father God, I receive right now the infilling of the Holy Spirit in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
