Fire Of Conviction

Fire of Conviction

He [the Holy Spirit] will convict the world concerning sin. John 16:8

On this day, January 22, in the Year of our Lord 1995, the fire of God’s manifest presence filled Coggin Avenue Baptist Church in Brownwood, Texas. This movement of the Holy Spirit spilled over to nearby Howard Payne University and far beyond.

This move of God was so significant, it was reported in the Houston Chronicle, the Dallas Morning News, and on the Phil Donahue Show. On this historic day, Pastor John Avant prayed, “Lord, we call out to You for genuine awakening…that will send literally hundreds and hundreds of students to every corner of this nation and world with a fire of revival in their hearts.” Those words proved to be prophetic.

As the Holy Spirit of God filled the church sanctuary with God’s holiness, people fell on their faces. They ran to the front in prayer. There was a deep sense of brokenness, open confession of sin, repentance, and humility before Christ.

In the months that followed, gang members in the small town of Brownwood repented and came to Christ. Thirty or more of the gang members were baptized and have been following Christ ever since.

God can deeply penetrate your community today. Receive God’s gift of conviction of sin.

Father God, today, send Your Holy Spirit and convict Your people of sin. I welcome the gift of repentance in my life and on behalf of my church family..
