Why Fast

Why Fast?

When you fast… Matthew 6:13

In a day of golden arches and pizza palaces, fasting from food is certainly a form of rebellion against the status quo. While some enjoy it more than others, we all like to eat. To deny yourself the pleasure of eating solid food for a day, a week, or a month is counterintuitive. So why do it?

Fasting is the fastest way to get something from God; that is to say, it is the fastest way to get our will surrendered to the will of Christ and to get our hearts in a position where we are ready to receive from God.

Fasting is a way of expressing our hunger for God. When you are more hungry to receive something from God than to sink your teeth into a fat, juicy hamburger or a slice of pepperoni pizza, you can be confident that God is calling you to fast.

Jesus did not say, “If you fast.” He said, “When you fast.”

If you have never before considered abstaining from physical food in order to seek God with greater focus at the beginning of this New Year may be a perfect time to start.

Loving Father, thank You for desiring deeper intimacy with me. As I consider fasting from food, draw me closer into intimacy with You.
