Herrnhut– Our Pentecost

Herrnhut– Our Pentecost

“Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in You?” Psalm 85:6

On this day, August 13, in the year of our Lord 1727, the manifest presence of Christ was poured out on Nicholas Ludwig Von Zinzendorf and his church family in Herrnhut, Germany. This twenty-seven year old pastor of a group of young, vibrant believers would refer to this day as “our baptism in the Holy Spirit” and “our Pentecost.” Church history would call this day the birth of the missionary church. They received fire—they had ignition and they had lift off!

During the first two weeks of August, Zinzendorf and his people spent entire nights in prayer seeking the face of God. On August 13, he called for a communion service, and before they were done, the presence of Christ filled the gathering and overshadowed each of them. Before the end of the month, they would start a prayer meeting that continued twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week for one hundred years. That small congregation would go on to send out five hundred missionaries all over the world, and it all started in a prayer meeting that encountered the manifest presence of Christ.

Oh Lord God Almighty, give me and my church a fresh Pentecost visitation of your manifest presence. Gather us together in one place, in one accord, for one purpose—to receive an outpouring of Your Holy Spirit that will touch not only our lives but the nations. Will you not revive us again that Your people may rejoice in You?
