Anointed Preaching

Anointed Preaching

On this day, July 7, in the Year of our Lord 1741, Jonathan Edwards was preparing to preach the next day his most memorable sermon, “Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God.” In the sermon, Edwards would preach, “The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider or some loathsome insect over the flame, abhors you and is dreadfully provoked. His wrath toward you burns like fire; he looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the fire…it is nothing but His hand that holds you from falling into the fire every moment.”

Towards the conclusion of the message, people convulsed with tears, agony, and distress. People were beyond controlling themselves. With all the tears and outcries, he urged the people to be quiet so that he could finish his message. The message was followed by deep, profound repentance.

O, that God would again anoint preachers today to preach the kingdom of repentance and the healthy fear of God on their people.

Father God, today pour out Your Holy Spirit on my pastor as he prepares to preach the Word of God. Encounter him in the preparation so he can lead us to encounter Christ as he preaches, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
