Experiencing Revival at the Feet of Jesus

Experiencing Revival at the Feet of Jesus

Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42

On this day, Mary and Martha both learned a lesson on revival. They learned that in order to see revival now, we must learn where to position ourselves. If we want to encounter the reviving presence of Jesus, we need to sit at His feet, to learn from Him, to spend time with Him.

It is so easy to fall into the Martha trap. Life comes at us so fast. It is easy to get caught up in business as usual. One of the pastors I served under in a previous ministry used to say this to me all the time, “If the devil can’t get you to sin, he will make you busy and accomplish the same thing.” Wow, it is true!

Friends, if we want personal revival, if we want to encounter Christ, we must choose what is better. We must follow Mary’s example and not get caught up in meaningless tasks, and we must spend time at the feet of Jesus.

One of my personal hang-ups that I have gained victory over in recent years is the battle with sleep. I developed a habit of going to bed late yet still having good intentions of waking up and spending time with Jesus. Unfortunately I found myself hitting the snooze button. I realized that I will never be a Mary if I can’t get out of bed.

Martin Luther said, “I have so much to do today I must spend the first three hours in prayer in order to get everything done.” Hallelujah! What a great example! Spending time at the feet of Jesus is the right way to start our day and it creates a posture to receive from Christ.

If we want revival now, we must practice being a Mary and avoid Martha’s distractions.
