2022 Breakthrough Fast: Day 19

Pleading Promises

My mentor, Armin Gesswein, told the story about his mentor, Uncle Am, who would go to his barn to spend time alone with God with nothing more than his Bible. He would kneel on the hay with his Bible open and seek God through His Word. When Armin asked him why, he pointed his bony finger into Armin's chest and said, “Young man, learn to plead the promises of God."

So ... what promises is God giving to you during these days of fasting? Are you learning to identify and plead the promises?

“Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” 2 Peter 1:4

Hopefully, you have been reading broadly and feeding deeply on God's word. Through it all what commands have stood out – things God is asking you to do? What promises have stood out – things God promises to do for you? I love Psalm 119:18, which says, “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things out of your law.”

One helpful and practical tip you might use when reading the Bible is to read with three different colored pens.
Black is used to underline commands … what God tells me to do for Him.
Red is used to underline promises … what God tells me that He will do for me.
Blue is used to underline general information.

Now it is your turn. I recommend that you take the next 30 minutes and review the Scripture God has you reading. What is it that He has told you to do for Him? What has He promised you that He will do for you? Identify the promises and plead them before God!

Be courageous,
Fred Hartley, III
