Promised God-Son

Promised God-Son

“Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”
John 8:58

Every name of God is a promise.

When Jesus said, before Abraham was, I AM, he categorically put himself in a league all by himself. He was not simply identifying himself as one among many religious leaders. He was not putting himself on par with Muhammad, Buddha, Krishna, or Abraham. He wasn’t simply calling himself a son of God like you and I are sons of God. Jesus was saying he is God— equal with God— equal with the one who identified himself to Moses as, I AM WHO I AM (Exodus 3:14).
It is no wonder, when the religious leaders heard this, they picked up stones to throw at him (John 8:59).

As you consider Christ, you can bow before him as God, or you can pick up stones to kill him. Regarding him as simply another religious huckster, however, is unacceptable.

When Christ, before Abraham was, I AM, he made you a promise. He is God— the I AM WHO I AM.

I bow before the great I AM— Father, Son, Spirit— and declare to you my allegiance today in Jesus’ name.
