Find Your Promise

Find Your Promise

“‘Honor your father and mother.’ (This is the first commandment with a promise.) ‘That it may go well with you.’” Ephesians 6:2-3

This year we have already learned several ways to identify Bible promises:
Many promises are labeled as promises.
Every name of God is a promise.
Every virtue of God is a promise.
Most Bible promises are not labeled, but simply include an I will statement from God.

Now today we learn a new principle: most promises, as you will discover, are linked to a command.

God gives you His promises to tell you what He will do for you because He loves you. He gives you the commands so that you can show Him how much you love Him.
God pursues a love relationship with you. When he gives you a command, he always wants you to know it is for the purpose, that it may go well with you. To this extent, every command is a promise.

His promises assure that he is worthy of your trust. His commands give you a tangible way to express your trust.

God wants you to grow up and mature as His child. He gives you a promise to quickly reward you when you obey him. Often the more difficult the obedience, the greater the reward.

Loving Father, thank you for inviting me into a covenant love relationship with you. Today I take hold of your promises so that I can obey your commands.
