Ruined in the Fire
Ruined in the Fire
“If Your presence will not go with me…” Exodus 33:15
Moses initially received his call out of an encounter with the fire of God’s manifest presence. It ruined him forever. Later in his ministry, he was still crying out for the manifest presence of God, If Your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. When Moses asked God for His presence to go with him, he obviously was not asking for God’s omnipresence because it is impossible to get away from God’s omnipresence. Moses was explicitly asking for God’s manifest presence.
Once we have tasted the manifest presence of Christ, we, too, are forever ruined. The manifest presence of God becomes the standard without which we will never properly function. Each of is initially called out of an encounter with God’s manifest presence, and we are continually called into an encounter with His manifest presence. This longing for the manifest presence of Christ to go with us every day in order to properly fulfill our calling is healthy Christianity. Once we encounter God’s tangible presence, the longing to continually encounter His presence is always deep within us.
Today, let’s use the one hundred and fifty year old prayer of Charles Spurgeon as our heart cry for God’s fire:
O God, send us the Holy Spirit! Give us both the breath of spiritual life and the fire of unconquerable zeal. You are our God. Answer us by fire, we pray to You! Answer us both by wind and fire, and then we will see You to be God indeed. The Kingdom comes not, and the work is flagging. Oh, that You would send the wind and the fire! And You will do this when we are all of one accord, all believing, all expecting, all prepared by prayer.1

This daily Christ-encountering, fire-starter is not intended to replace your daily Bible reading and prayer time, but rather to motivate you to spend extended time in His presence.
